Susie Shavelson

Early Childhood Associate Director

Susie Shavelson holds a Master’s Degree in Early Childhood Education from Lehman College in New York. Susie has worked at the JCC in early childhood education for the past 26 years, holding a progression of various positions before becoming associate director, including: music teacher, coordinator of the toddler intergenerational program at the Dubin House, parenting place program, and infant toddler program supervisor. Through Susie’s guidance, the infant toddler program has grown from two to three classes. In 2007 she was awarded the JCC Amy Smith Memorial Award for excellence in Jewish programming.

Susie’s two grown children were also active in programs at the JCC from as early as “Intro to Nursery School” through being counselors at Kinder Camp and even teaching in our Toddler Full Day Program!

It is apparent that Susie has a true commitment to her family at the JCC and takes great pride in being a part of this organization. She looks forward to helping seeing new generations of infants and toddlers grow and develop in a loving environment.

Karen Cohen

Early Childhood Assistant Director

Karen knew early on that her career choice would involve early childhood education when she began working with young children as early as 15 years old starting off as the neighborhood babysitter. She later went on become a mother’s helper with positions in Manhattan and overseas.

After graduating with a BA in Elementary Education, Karen’s first teaching job was a Kindergarten teacher position in the heart of Independence Hall in Phildelphia. Her career continued as a 2nd and 3rd grade teacher in the Philadelphia School District followed by six years as the Director of a childcare center in Collegeville PA. After leaving Philadelphia for the New Jersey suburbs, to raise her own family, Karen was appointed the Sari Isdaner Early Childhood Assistant Director in 2006. Karen, the mother of two young children, says she loves when she drives up to work and her oldest child says, “YEAH, we are at our 2nd home.”
