Sports Award Dinner Honorees


Lifetime Achievement Award: Sam Jacobs

Sam Jacobs is the recipient of the 2016 Lifetime Achievement Award.  Jacobs is a former JCC board member and coached youth basketball for the Katz JCC’s Sun National Bank Junior Maccabi Basketball League as well as Team South Jersey’s basketball teams that compete in the JCC Maccabi Games and Mid-Atlantic Junior Maccabi Games.  He was a 4-year player for the Cornell University men’s basketball team and is a member of both the Philadelphia Sports Hall of Fame and SJ Basketball Hall of Fame.


David Back Memorial Maccabi Award: David Golkow

This year’s David Back Memorial Maccabi Award recipient is David Golkow, who competed in the JCC Maccabi Games with Team South Jersey.  He is the founder and past president of Athletes Against Bullying, which encourages student athletes at Cherry Hill High School East to promote anti-bullying messages throughout their school and community.  He is a freshman at the University of Pennsylvania.


People’s Choice Award: Bruce Apple

The People’s Choice Award, awarded to an individual who has made a significant contribution to sports within the local Jewish community, is Bruce Apple, a long time JCC member, past JCC board member and former Team South Jersey coach for the JCC Maccabi Games.  He is the national co-chair for USA Maccabi Golf and served as the head trainer for the USA Maccabiah Basketball Team.


Emerging Leadership Award: Jake Silpe

Jake Silpe is the recipient of this year’s Emerging Leadership Award.  Silpe, who played varsity basketball of Cherry Hill High School East, was a member of the Team South Jersey boys basketball team and the recipient of the West Point Society’s Dwight D. Eisenhower Leadership Award.  Jake is a sophomore at the Wharton School of Business at the University of Pennsylvania and plays on the men’s basketball team
