Celebrate Healthy Heart Month

By: Gene Bonetti, Fitness Director

Did you know heart disease is the leading cause of death for men and women in the United States? Every year, 1 in 4 deaths are caused by heart disease. There is some good to be found, though –  heart disease can often be prevented when people make healthy choices and manage their health when they make positive lifestyle choices.

We’re proud to celebrate Healthy Heart Month at the Katz JCC every February, and we strive to raise awareness in the community about heart disease and how it can be prevented. Our goal is to spread the word through Healthy Heart Month programming and raise awareness about heart disease and encourage our members to live healthy and hearty lives! We join with the American Heart Association’s national movement this month in support of healthier communities and healthier lives.

Sure the dark chocolate and red wine are good for your heart, but it takes much more than a sweet treat and very good vino to maintain a heart healthy lifestyle. A diet low in fat and rich in nutritious food and good sleeping habits, coupled with a great exercise program will help reduce stress, lower blood pressure and most importantly lower the risk of heart disease.

Your body is a machine….we take great care of our phones, cars, laptops..etc., but there is nothing more important than taking of the machine that takes of you. Your body is an incredible piece of work, complicated but put together so precisely. It’s a mechanism of magnificent wonder and amazement and at the center of it all, it’s the heart that says “How you doin” day in and day out.

Check out our fantastic Healthy Heart Month programs this month including: JCC Aqua-thon on February 9, Roll up for Red on February 12, the Wiffleball Tournament on February 15, Heart Healthy Gourmet Demo on February 23, Zumb-athon on February 26 as well screenings for Bodyfat, Blood Pressure and Heart rate readings.  There is something for everyone this month at the JCC with part of the proceeds benefiting the American Heart Association. Do it for yourself, do it for someone you love, do it for the cause!
