Queen Esther and Jewish Identity

Instructor: Sarah Rosenson

In this interactive discussion class, we will explore the fact that Esther had to navigate two worlds: the Jewish world and the Persian world. How are American Jews living in two civilizations? How has the experience of being an American Jew changed over the course of the last several generations? What do our names tell us about our identities and our family histories? We will also look at the ways this story both empowers and degrades women. Our last class session will be spent discussing a hard question: should Mordechai have bowed down to Haman? Come join the conversation!
