Brian Adler – 20 years ago
By Brian Adler, JCC Development Director & Assistant Director
A little over 20 years ago, in June 1997, the Katz Jewish Community Center opened its doors at our current location, the Weinberg Jewish Community Campus.
A lot happened in 1997: the people’s princess, Princess Diana, left behind a legacy that lives on today, as strong as ever. Titanic was released in movie theatres- our hearts still go on, and we still don’t how why Kate couldn’t get Jack on that floating door with her. JK Rowling’s Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone was published, and the world of wonder and magic changed as we know it. Purrell launched on store shelves and germaphobes everywhere celebrated. Beanie Babies captured the hearts of little children (and their holiday gift lists) across the country.
When I think back on the past 20 years of the Katz JCC, there are more memories to recall than I think my brain can hold. But that’s a good thing- it means that in the past 20 years, we have done so much good right here at 1301 Springdale Road.
Brian Adler – Today
We’ve changed the lives of thousands of children in our Sari Isdaner Early Childhood Center, summer day camps and after school programs! We’ve helped to build stronger, healthier bodies in Health & Wellness. We’ve tapped into book and film lovers alike with our nationally acclaimed festivals, and we’ve given thousands of older adults a place to call home away from home through numerous social and recreational programs. We’ve been a critical building block in the lives of children and adults with special needs. And we’ve done it all while adapting to the needs of you, our community. We wouldn’t be here and be who we are FOR you, without you!
To finish off our year of celebrating the Weinberg Jewish Community Campus’s 20th anniversary, the JCC is pulling out all the stops for what will be an unforgettable night. Jason Alexander, who is perhaps best known for his unforgettable role as George Costanza on the hit American comedy Seinfeld, will grace our stage on Wednesday, June 6 at 7pm. As Long as You’re Asking – A Conversation with Jason Alexander is full of comedy, music and some surprising conversation with Alexander, and it’s a night you do NOT want to miss! We’re thrilled Jason will be a part of this incredible night we have in store for all of you. It is without a doubt a grand finale to what has been a pinnacle year in our 20 year history.
Thank you for being with us- whether you’ve been here for the past 20 years or maybe just the past few months. You are all a part of our JCC family. Here’s to the next 20!
