Pennies for Points: Philanthropic Sportsmanship

20 December, 2017

by Bryan Lentine, Katz JCC Sports & Leagues Coordinator

On November 28, I took a shift at our staff table for #GivingTuesday, a worldwide day of charitable giving.  I sat at the table for an hour, collecting donations from members and letting them know that their donations were going to good causes.  The Katz JCC was raising money for our senior adult lunch program, scholarship assistance to children who cannot afford to attend the JCC Camps at Medford, those who need tuition aid to attend our Sari Isdaner Early Childhood Education Center and our special needs programming through the ACHaD Department.  I did my part and I thanked everyone that donated.  My real passion is sports, but I felt good taking time out of my schedule to participate in this charitable endeavor.

With #GivingTuesday behind me, I turned my attention to our Blumenfeld Family Master’s Basketball League.  The league was off to a great start and then a member surprised me with this selfless idea, Pennies for Points. Steve Leshinski still had the #GivingTuesday mindset!  He suggested we keep the holiday spirit alive within our league community, and continue to do some charitable giving.

On Thursday, December 21, the Blumenfeld Family Master’s Basketball League will be participating in Pennies for Points. If you are able, we ask that you pledge something for points scored. No amount is too small! You can pledge to donate based on a specific player’s point’s scored, or you can pledge to donate for every point scored the evening of Thursday, December 21.

I will let you know what your total is when the stats are completed.  A typical night averages just about 500 points. If you were to donate 10 cents for every point scored, your total donation would be $50. Of course, you are welcome to donate as little or as much as you’d like. Any amount is helpful.

The Blumenfeld Family Master’s Basketball League is raising money for the same programs the Katz JCC helped on #GivingTuesday:

  • Scholarship assistance to children who cannot afford to attend the JCC Camps at Medford
  • Our senior adult lunch program
  • Those who need tuition aid to attend our Sari Isdaner Early Childhood Education Center
  • Our special needs programming through the ACHaD Department

I hope you can support Pennies for Points this Thursday, December 21.  Steve Leshinski’s generous idea really marries philanthropy and sportsmanship and I couldn’t be prouder of our league!

Please let me know what you are willing to pledge.  I can be reached at blentine@jfedsnj.org or at 856-424-4444, x 1145.
